Delhi Transportation

As a capital, Delhi is also a hub of transportation of the country. Airlines, railways, and road network links Delhi to all major cities of a whole country. For traveling in India, Delhi is the best starting point.

Getting there

By air
The Indira Gandhi International Airport is situated around 20 km from the city center. The normal time taken to reach the airport from the city center is around 20-25 minutes. Buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws are available to cater to the tourists.

By rail
The Indian Railways run a gigantic, modern and organized network which connects Delhi to most major and minor destinations within India. There are three important Railway stations in Delhi: Delhi Main (in the old Delhi area of Shahjahanabad). New Delhi, Nizamudin, and a few smaller railway stations like Sarai Rohilla and Delhi Cantonment.

Most long distance trains services are from the three major railway stations. New Delhi railway station is located in the heart of New Delhi, barely 2 kms. From Connaught Place. Delhi Main station is located in the old city, close to Red Fort. Both are extremely busy and crowded stations. By contrast, the Nizamuddin station, which has limited train connection, is less crowded.

By bus
Delhi is well connected by road to all major destinations in north India. The main bus tation is the Inter- State Bus Terminus(ISBT) at Kashmere Gate, north of Delhi Main railway station. ISBT may jolt you with its chaos and pollution. However, like thousands of travellers everyday. You can find your way through the labyrinth if you keep your cool. ISBT has all the basic facilities including a tourist information office, a State Bank of India branch, a chemist, a post office, several phone booths and fast food stalls. Do not get influenced by touts, travel agents, auto rickshaw and taxi drivers because there is a chance that you may get cheated. Buses from ISBT go to destinations in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. There is a new ISBT at Sarai Kale Khan near Nizamuddin Railway Station and Anand Vihar in East Delhi. Buses from here go to Agra, Mathura and Brindavan, Gwalior and Bharatpur.

Getting around
The easiest way to get around the city is by taxi or auto-rickshaws that can be easily found anywhere in the city. For taxis, they can be booked with fixed prices in advance at local taxi stands throughout the city. For auto-rickshaws, although there are the official rates for auto-rickshaws, the meters are often out of order, and surcharges can happen to be above the metered price. Therefore, the price must be negotiated before setting off.

Public transport is another common way of transportation in Delhi. There are public bus services which are inexpensive, but always crowded.
